Top 3 Reasons to Visit the Sandhills of Nebraska

Itching for a road trip? Time to set off on a 280 mile road trip through the Sandhills of Nebraska. This unique area is a perfect opportunity for you to take some time and explore Nebraska from Aurora to North Platte. The Sandhills span about 20,000 square miles and take up nearly a fourth of the state of Nebraska. Spring is the perfect time for you to take off and experience some of the best views Nebraska has to offer.

    1. Kearney Nebraska - this Nebraska town is home to Louie the Loper and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Take some time off the road here and visit the Fort Kearney State Recreational Park.  Here you can partake in some of Nebraska’s finest fishing, swimming and hiking trails.

    2. Sandhill Crane Migration - each spring nearly half a million sandhill cranes migrate North from Texas and Mexico and stop over near the North Platte River for a breather. The cranes stay as long as a month to refuel before continuing their journey north to areas as far as Canada, Nebraska and Siberia. This is one wildlife phenomenon you don’t want to miss!

    3. Valentine National Wildlife Refuge Complex - right in the heart of the Sandhills lies the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge. Here in the middle of 72,000 acres of rolling grass covered sand dunes you’ll find many wild animals in their natural habitat. The Refuge, created by Congress in 1935, is thought to be the home to about 59 different mammals, include Coyotes, and 22 species of reptiles and amphibians such as Blanding’s Turtle! If you haven’t had your fix of birds from the Crane Migration, the refuge is home to about 270 species of bird as well!
