    Taking Your Pet Camping

    Camping with Your Pets

We all can appreciate a little r&r sometimes and while we enjoy spending time away from home, so do our pets. As natural explorers it’s no wonder they give us that look before we walk out the door, leaving them behind while we set off on an adventure. Our pets want to come too, so if you’ve been thinking about bringing your furry family member along with you, there are some things you will need to make sure are in place before you do.

    Vaccinations

The most important thing to have in line before you take your pet on your next trip is their vaccinations. Your pets may encounter wildlife or other pets while at the campground. Check with your veterinarian to make sure they are up to date before you bring your pets along.

    Make a List

Many people make a list for themselves before they leave on a trip, just to make sure they don’t forget anything. You should also make one for your pet as well. You will want to make sure you have all their necessities such as food, water, medications, leashes, toys and any other things you think they may need. This is especially important if you are staying at a remote location. In that instance, you should bring extra food just in case something unexpected were to happen.

    Leaving Them at Camp

If you are going to be checking out the local scenery and can’t bring your pet along, make sure they have plenty of water and place to relieve themselves. Also, if you are going to be leaving them inside your RV, keep the air conditioning on for them especially on a hot day. Remember that if it is too hot for you, then it’s too hot for your pet.

    Flea and Ticks

Make sure you treat your pets for fleas and ticks before you leave. These pests can be easily picked up by your pet if untreated, especially in heavily wooded areas. You don't want to bring any of those home with you!

Pet Friendly Campgrounds and National Park Rules

Before embarking on your journey with your furry friend in tow, make sure you know what the rules are for pets. Many National Parks don’t allow pets on waterfronts, backcountry or hiking trails. You’ll want to take a look at their website to find out what sort of stipulations are in line for bringing your pets. Campgrounds will also have their own rules regarding pets. There may be breed restrictions or a  limit on how many pets you can bring.

    Identify Your Pet

Make sure your pets tags are up to date with a correct phone number. It’s best to put your cell phone number on there since you will obviously be away from home. Too many pets get lost each year due to not having tags or being microchipped. This is a very simple and important thing to do before you decide to take them on vacation with you.

Now that you have all the information you need to be better prepared for traveling with your pet, you can enjoy some much needed quality time with them. Your pet is sure to be a happy camper by sharing in the adventure with you. Have fun this summer and keep your pets safe!
