Firework Safety Tips for the Fourth of July

    Firework Safety

It’s that time of year again! American flags waving, hot summer nights, and fireworks lighting up the sky. Every year America celebrates our independence with a day dedicated to American pride and the grand spectacle of a fireworks show. Whether you are going to watch the professionals put on a show or have your own, we want to make sure you know the basics of firework safety. Accidents can happen so it’s important that you cover all your bases before engaging in firework activities.

    Safety Tips

    1. Know your local laws and obey them when using fireworks. Fireworks are not legal in every state or county, so it’s important you know this information before lighting off your fireworks. Check out the American Pyrotechnics Association website for the directory of state laws regarding firework display.

    2. Read all cautionary labels and performance descriptions before lighting.

    3. Do not let children use fireworks without a responsible adult present.  Some fireworks are too dangerous for children, so let the adults do the igniting.

    4. Alcohol and fireworks are a recipe for disaster. Save the drinking for after the show.

    5. It is recommended that you wear safety glasses while shooting off fireworks as one could severely or permanently damage their eyesight in an accident.

    6. Light one firework at a time and never bundle them together. Once lit move quickly away and give yourself enough distance between you and the firework.

    7. Do not carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them into glass or metal containers.

    8. Fireworks should ONLY be used outdoors. Choose a clear area away from trees, bushes or other flammable objects.

    9. Dud fireworks should never be re-lit. Wait 20 min and then place it in a bucket of water. You can also dispose of used fireworks by wetting them down and placing in a metal trash can away from combustible materials.

    10. Keep pets at home, loud firework explosions could spook your pet and cause severe anxiety for them.

No one wants to be rushed to the emergency room and setting some rules in place for your guests will ensure that no one gets hurt this Fourth of July. Fireworks can be a fun way to celebrate, so make sure that everyone using them, is using them correctly and safely to ensure you and your friends have a fun Fourth of July!
